Auditorium Renovation

Auditorium Renovation project focuses on improving the acoustic and architectural performance, the goal was to create an optimal sound environment.

Project overview

This project involves a comprehensive acoustic and architectural renovation of the STM Auditorium. Current acoustic deficiencies include excessive reverberation, poor sound distribution, and insufficient early reflections, making it difficult to maintain clarity in spoken-word performances, theatrical productions, and musical concerts.

The proposed design modifications will:

  • Regulate reverberation times to achieve a balanced sound decay.
  • Improve clarity indices (C50, C80) for both speech and music.
  • Optimize lateral energy distribution for an immersive experience.
  • Upgrade material applications to enhance sound absorption and reflection.

The architectural renovation will include:

  • Reworking ceiling and wall structures to integrate acoustic solutions.
  • Updating lighting to enhance visibility and aesthetic appeal.
  • Replacing flooring and seating materials for improved comfort and acoustics.

Project approach

The project follows a research-driven design methodology, including:

  1. Pre-Design & Analysis
    • Site analysis and 3D scanning of existing conditions.
    • Acoustic data collection and simulations.
    • Interviews and surveys to assess audience experience.
  2. Architectural & Acoustic Redesign
    • Implementing perforated acoustic panels on ceilings and walls.
    • Designing a dynamic and elegant parametric ceiling to optimize reflections.
    • Enhancing lighting design to create focused and immersive environments.
  3. Implementation & Testing
    • Fabrication of materials and acoustic components.
    • Installation of new structural and aesthetic elements.
    • Post-renovation acoustic testing to validate improvements.
